The Trager® Approach: Movement Education

The Trager® Approach

Learning to Move with Ease

Ori Zimmels, Certified Trager® Approach Practitioner

The Trager Approach is all about ease: feeling, experiencing,
cultivating and learning how to move with ease.  In The Trager
Approach
, practitioner and client work together through a series of on
and off the table movements in order to explore and introduce ease
into different areas of concern, and the mind/body continuum as a
whole.

The understanding is that we often hold ourselves in patterns of
Passive Tension. Passive tension happens when we are not fully
conscious of our participation in a behavior and, as a result, have
limited access to it. A good example of this is tight shoulders. Since
we don’t actively choose to hold our shoulders tightly,  we can
suspect we are caught up in an unconscious pattern. Passive Tension
can often be momentarily alleviated through tissue manipulation, but
many approaches don’t prevent patterns from reoccurring.

The Trager Approach moves us instead towards what I call Active
Relaxation. In this approach, the practitioner assists the client in
gaining access to either a wider range of motion or a wider range of
felt sense experiences. This translates into a greater sense of
freedom, resulting in a greater sense of possibility and ease.

In The Trager Approach, ease is acquired through table work, where the
practitioner rhythmically moves the body in a unique continuum of
spirals, circles, and wave like patterns. Off the table work consists
of exploring a variety of physical and mental exercises, assessing
behaviors & patterns, and introducing new ones tailored specifically
to the client’s unique life circumstances, focus, and desires.
